How Shocks & Struts Control Motion

Shocks and struts contain pistons moving through oil-filled cylinders to resist suspension travel. As wheels move up and down, pistons force hydraulic fluid through calibrated openings, converting motion energy into heat. Struts perform dual roles by damping movement while serving as structural members supporting other components. Shocks only provide damping without bearing vehicle weight or mounting additional parts. These components prevent repeated bouncing that would otherwise occur after hitting bumps. Effective damping keeps tires firmly planted for maximum grip during acceleration, braking, and cornering.

What Causes Shock & Strut Failure

Internal seals deteriorate from continuous piston movement and temperature swings, allowing fluid to seep out.
